Jasmine and I met nearly 12 years ago in New York City. We were both already practicing yoga when we met and yet nothing was ever the same about our yoga practice after that. It was like our union kindled something much bigger, creative and cosmic. Definitely that very real feeling of before and after! Together we could move mountains...paint the sky purple and laugh and laugh and celebrate the movement, the moments, the freedom as our connection to Oneness.
We absolutely shared this passion for the spiritual connection through conscious movement and were respectively devoted to waking up. Jasmine's background in dance and dance ethnology and my own love for dance together created something that surprised us both. Practice became a daily ceremony, a way to experience spirit through our bodies and breath and to worship what was unfolding.
The movement became the medicine, the energy to feel ALIVE, to heal and to experience Gratitude.
Together, we infused our practice and teaching with music, poetry and tapped into the great mystical lineage of the dancing dervish's spirit and in the 'turning', that divine doorway, we could experience our soul and soulfulness. We bowed deeply to the the innovative and creative lineage of Krishnamarchara and the power of the vinyasa krama became real for us to honor the body's own intelligence and to spiritualize our physical form. We called on the devotion of the bhakti yogi's as a daily invocation to keep showing up, to light and brighten our way.
We both wanted to feel NEW each day, to live with fresh insight and enjoy a practice we could teach from. Truly, as teachers, we teach because we love to learn. And this is the biggest blessing of YOGA, to meet yourself to begin to know yourself and to love yourself.
We each and together share a soulful dynamic dervish like dance Vinyasa that is drenched in devotion and calls on us to dig a little deeper and reach that much higher, each and every day! It's a spirited path that allows you to fulfill your destiny.
Dana Flynn and Jasmine Tarkeshi are the Creators and Directors of Laughing Lotus Yoga Centers in SF and NYC.
