Teacher Spotlight
Pandit Rajmani Tigunait

Picture yourself growing up in a world where miracles are woven into the tapestry of daily life. Imagine seeing-not once but many times-a metal bowl floating through the village pulled by an unseen force to the exact place where a thief hid his booty. Or watching an untouchable healing-with a pinch of ash from his fire-everyone who asks for his help, even those who mock him for his low birth. Or seeing a monk stroll across the surface of a pond, seat himself on the water, and play two flutes, one with each nostril!

This was the world of Pandit Rajmani Tigunait's boyhood in a region of North India that has been a stronghold of tantra for thousands of years. The tantric "miracles" woven into the fabric of village life fed his faith in unseen forces and awakened a lifelong appetite for ever-deepening experiences of the inner dimension of life.

Pandit Rajmani Tigunait
An outstanding teacher is first and foremost an outstanding student, and Panditji's appetite for spiritual knowledge was nourished by a series of remarkable teachers. The first was his father, a learned man whose life revolved around meditation and scripture recitation and who freely shared his vast knowledge of yoga's oral tradition (and the contents of his extensive Sanskrit library) with his son. When Panditji was in fifth grade, the head of a nearby monastery took him under his wing, deepening Panditji's exposure to the oral tradition and providing his first formal instruction in pranayama. From eighth grade on, he attended a traditional Sanskrit school, where he had the good fortune to be the star pupil of a master renowned for his scriptural knowledge and for his skillful performance of rituals.

While completing his undergraduate and doctoral work at the University of Allahabad, Panditji continued to find his way into the presence of spiritual masters, sitting at their feet, practicing under their guidance, and absorbing their wisdom. Among the extraordinary teachers he encountered during this period, the one that Panditji speaks of most often-with love and joy shining in his eyes-is Swami Sadananda, a philosopher and tantric healer whose skillful tutelage prepared the young man to meet his ultimate master, the Himalayan adept Sri Swami Rama.

A few months after this momentous event, Swami Rama sent Panditji to the shrine of the Divine Mother at Kamakhya, where he had the good fortune to study under the guidance of the renowned tantric master Dolai Baba. Thereafter Panditji lived with Swami Rama for two decades, studying, practicing, and teaching under his guidance, eventually stepping into Swamiji's role as the spiritual head of the Himalayan Institute when Swami Rama left his body in 1996. The systematic teaching of tantra that Panditji is undertaking in the coming year flows from decades of personal study and practice and is the culmination of his work here in the West during the past 30 years.

Editor's Note: Pandit Rajmani Tigunait will be teaching and presenting a keynote at both the San Francisco Conference and Boston Conference.
